My 500th Post- First Impression Friday- The Secret History & Space Opera

First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I am just over 100 pages in to The Secret History, which is only a dent in this 559 page novel. Not a lot has happened yet, and I kind of love it for that reason. This book has so many elements that are right in my wheelhouse- it is character-driven, atmospheric, and there is a subtle element of mystery.

I love when a book hints right at the beginning as to what is to come and the rest of the story is about the journey that the characters take to get there. I am very intrigued by these characters and their lifestyles. I appreciate that we are given the perspective of someone who is both an insider and an outsider at the same time.

I can not wait to see where this story is going. I am enjoying this one so much that I am taking my time with it. If this one does not end up being a five star novel and a new favourite I will be absolutely shocked.

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

I have had my eye on Space Opera since it came out, and the fact that it was nominated for a Hugo Award was the push that I needed to finally pick it up. I am also reading this one for the Avengers Readathon. I decided to listen to the audiobook and I think that was a great choice- the narrator has a wonderful voice and I think he is perfectly capturing the tone of this story. I am only two chapters in but I am LOVING IT! It is so quirky and hilarious- it is exactly the kind of book I am in the mood for and have a hard time finding. There is a very specific type of humour that I enjoy in novels and I think that book has it. I really hope that continues and that this becomes a five star SciFi novel.

It is refreshing to currently be reading backlist titles instead of ARCs or new releases! Have you read either of these books? What did you think? Should I pick up The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt as well?

I cannot believe that this my 500th post. It feels like just yesterday that I sat down to write post #1. Back then, I never would have imagined I would end up here. Thank you for all your support along the way!

I’ve never read Catherynne Valente, but I enjoy her so much on Twitter that at some point, I think I’ll try, even though what she writes is outside my wheelhouse. I’m glad you’re enjoying Space Opera so much!
