I am thrilled to being doing something a little bit different this week.  Penguin Canada sent me this cookbook called Oven to Table and I thought it would be fun to make a few of the recipes and let you know what I think.  I am including a few photos I took of the recipes that I whipped up.

I started with “Oven-Baked Balsamic Beef and Vegetable Stew“.

Now, I have made stew in the past, but this recipe took the only classic to another level.  I never thought to add balsamic vinegar, but that extra note of flavour made all of the difference.  It tasted even better the next day! This is a heart, healthy, and delicious meal that will become a staple for me.

Next up is “Simple Scalloped Potatoes with Celeriac“.

Scalloped potatoes are my dad’s absolute favourite, but they can be such a pain to make.  I have attempted to make them in the past and was never happy with how they turn out.  All that changed with this recipe- they were so creamy and delicious.  My dad very much approved and said I quote “Those are fantastic, save that recipe.” Enough said.

Finally, I tried my hand at baking and made “Lemon Pudding Cake“.

I love a fresh and light dessert, and this cake fit the bill.  I have never had anything quite like it.  I understand why it is called a pudding cake because it is very much pudding like it texture.  This is one of those recipes that I can see myself experimenting with in the future- adding different berries, chocolates, etc.

So, there you have it! I am so pleased with this cookbook and have tabbed more recipes that I would like to try.  There are a lot of breakfast recipes that look so good that I haven’t had a chance to try yet.  Do not be surprised if you see me talking about those in my future “favourite” posts. I had so much fun with this.  If you enjoyed this let me know in the comments and I might start reviewing more cookbooks.

Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me an copy in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Nice review and pics! I find a lot of cookbooks to be too intimidating to try, but this has a really cool concept and seems accessible.

  2. Thankfully I already ate before I read this post or it would have been like going to the grocery store on an empty stomach. That lemon cake looks amazing, I love lemon, it’s so refreshing.
