Favourite Book(s) of the Month: The Next Person You Meet in Heaven, The Silence of the Girls
Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks
Every Breath is just what you expect a Nicholas Sparks novel to be. It is romantic with elements that are rather heavy. The insta-love in this one did make me cringe a little but it is my favourite book of his that he has published in the last few years. I appreciate that it was based on a true story.
The Next Person You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
I love everything that Mitch Albom writes, and The Next Person You Meet in Heaven is not exception. It is just as powerful and heartbreaking as the first one. I have a review of this book if you want to know more of my thoughts and what it was like to meet Mitch Albom!
Calypso by David Sedaris
Calypso was my first David Sedaris novel and I will definitely be picking up more of his work! I love his sarcastic sense of humour and the way that he talks about his life and his family. I listened to the audiobook for this one, which he narrates, and it was excellent! I plan to listen to all of his books on audiobook because it is such an enjoyable experience.
Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann
Killers of the Flower Moon is such an interesting and wild story. I still can not believe that I had not heard about this until I picked up the book. It highlights the injustices that Native Americans face. This book made me realize that I need to pick up more historical non-fiction novels!
The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker
The Silence of the Girls might be my favourite retelling of the Trojan War that I have read so far. I appreciated that we were seeing the story through the eyes of a women, and it was eye-opening for me. It was refreshing to see Achilles from a different perspective. It was also beautifully written. I highly recommend this one!
Well-Read Black Girl by Glory Edim
I love when I book reminds me how powerful reading can be! Well-Read Black Girl is a series of essays written by black women who share how reading has affected their lives. A lot of these women shared what it was like to be able to see themselves reflected in character in a novel. I thought it was very compelling.
Saga, Vol.4 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
I finally continued on with the Saga series! I was feeling slumpish this month and these graphic novels always help to pull me out of it. This series keeps getting weirder and weirder and I love it!!
Coming Clean by Kimberly Rae Miller
This memoir made me look at shows like Hoarders in a different light. Kimberley Rae Miller grew up with a father who was a hoarder and a mother who was a shopaholic. She shares what it is like growing up with that secret, and the shame that she felt. It affected her greatly as an adult. I thought it was a very raw and honest memoir.
Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
Franny and Zooey confirmed that J.D. Salinger is not for me. I hated Catcher in the Rye when I was in high school and I always wondered if I would feel differently if I read it as an adult. I decided to give Franny and Zooey a try before picking up Catcher in the Rye again. Let’s just say I will not be picking it up any time soon… Everything I disliked about Holden Caulfield was present in these characters as well. I understand that rich, intelligent, beautiful people can have extensional crisis but it is just not something that I enjoy reading about.
well done 🙂 productive month! at least in my eyes…

Nice job reading nine books! I’m hoping to read The Next Person You Meet in Heaven in December. I wasn’t able to fit it in last month or this month, sadly. I need to continue with the Saga series. I think I got up to Vol 5. I love the series so far.

Apparently not! I’m a huge fan of his work and I usually buy his books the day they come out on the shelves. I was even in B&N on Black Friday and didn’t see it. I know how I am spending my Friday night. Will let you know what I thought.

Great wrap up! I’ve also been listening to a string of Sedaris’s books on audio, and I’ve enjoyed them all so far. His sister Amy does some of the voices on Naked, which has been one of my favorites.

Thanks. I loved the stories about Amy in Calypso! I will need to check out Naked for sure!

I hadn’t heard of that particular Sparks book … probably because I read mostly those that were turned into movies at one point or another. My favourites are still Dear John and the Lucky One followed by The Longest Ride. Have you read those?

I have read all of his books! I always enjoy the ones that are made in to movies. I think my favourite of his is The Wedding- which is sort of a sequel to The Notebook. It’s beautiful!

Ah, yeah! I have heard of that, but I haven’t read it myself. I will keep it in mind 🙂

Great article!
I never read any of Nicholas Sparks books. I need to get on that, LoL. Do you have a recommendation on what book to start with?

Thank you! I think you can’t go wrong with any of the older Sparks books – but I would skip The Notebook. I really loved The Last Song!
