What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading-

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

89724

I have never read anything by Shirley Jackson and I have always heard such amazing things about her books.  Look at this cover!! Perfect book to get me in to the Halloween spirit.  I am about two hours in to the audiobook and it is very creepy. Enjoying it so far!

The Humans by Matt Haig

17827166

I have read one other book by Matt Haig, How To Stop Time, and unfortunately, I was disappointed in it.  I follow Matt Haig on twitter and think he is pretty amazing so I want to fall in love with his writing.  I am only a few chapters in to The Humans but I can already tell it is going to be a good one. It is so clever!

Just Finished-

Transcription by Kate Atkinson

39902707

This was my first Kate Atkinson and now I need to read everything she has written.  Her characters are very realistic and flawed.  I appreciate that she is able to create characters who are in no way perfect, but remain likeable.  I also loved the twist on a spy novel, and that fact that the story is told during different time periods.  This was a very original WWII novel.

You by Caroline Kepnes

20821614

I do not think a book has ever gotten under my skin quite like You has.  Just sitting here writing this brings a chill down my spine.  The story is written in second person, which was very effective.  I need to read more books like that! I highly recommend the audiobook for this one.  The narrator absolutely brings this twisted character to life!

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

40652148

I talked about this book in my First Impression Friday post and I predicted that it was going to be a five star read, and I was very much correct.  I have read many WWII fiction novels and this one stands out among the rest.  There is something really special about it.  The love story that develops brings hope in an often hopeless situation.  I also really loved that this is based on a true story.  I hope someone turns this book in to a movie!

Small Spaces by Katherine Arden

36959639

I knew that Katerine Arden wouldn’t fail me! Small Spaces is one of the best middle grade novels that I have read in years.  It is well-paced and wonderfully creepy.  I think I have developed a new fear of scarecrows!

Reading Next

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

38139409

I have been seeing this book everywhere and I am definitely intrigued! It is a horror novel that seems to be very diverse, which is refreshing because you do not see that often in the horror/thriller genre.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think?

Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a copy of  Transcription and to Harper Collins Canada for The Tattooist of Auschwitz in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I loved We Have Always Lived In The Castle. I couldn’t get it out of my head for WEEKS after I finished it.
I was a bit disappointed in How To Stop Time too. I really liked the premise, but it just wasn’t what I wanted it to be.

  2. ooh this post is so exciting to me! i’ve been eyeing We Have Always Lived in the Castle for a long time, so i’ll definitely be looking for your thoughts on that! i love love love You, and i just added The Tattooist of Auschwitz to my tbr, so your reading updates are making me very pleased 🙂 happy reading!

  3. I’m really happy to hear that you enjoyed the audiobook for You! I saw the trailer for the Netflix show and it looks so interesting! I might just pick up the audiobook before the show airs!

  4. I, too, am currently reading/listening to a Shirley Jackson…and liking it so far. Have only read her short fiction before and it’s as unsettling as horror (not to be confused with slasher fic) gets. All of your reads sound interesting. I’ve recently finished Straight into Darkness by Faye Kellerman and Home Home by Lisa Allen-Agostini – the former is a mystery set in pre-WWll Germany (with the man himself as a suspect) and the latter is a teen/young adult novel that deals with mental health. Review on my blog. I edit for a living so this week’s reading has been mostly wok related but I hope to get back to Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker and The Black Rose by Tananarive Due shortly.

  5. Great article! The books you mentioned sound really good. More books to add to my reading list of books to read, LoL.

The only book that I have read on your list was You by Caroline Kepnes. It was such an incredibly twisted read, yet I couldn’t stop reading it, LoL. It was by far the best thriller I’ve ever read. I tend to read books that get adapted and so far the tv adaptation of this is pretty perfect. A few changes here and there, but it still really works for the story. I’m usually so indecisive about what to read next so when I found out there was a sequel to You, picking what book to read next was finally super easy to decide on, LoL. Still reading the sequel. It’s just as crazy as the first book, LoL. The narrator for the audio book is Santino Fontana. He’s an amazing actor. He was the voice of Hans in the movie Frozen. Also was on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Shades of Blue on TV. I saw him on Broadway in Cinderella a few years ago. He has a great voice for narrating Joe. Although, after starting the show I can’t picture anyone but Penn Badgley doing those monologues.

I’m not sure what I’ll read next but I was thinking maybe Picnic at Hanging Rock. The Amazon series looks really good.

    1. Thank you!

I completely agree with you about You. Twisted is the perfect way to describe it. I try to read books that have been adapted as well and I am planning to watch the TV show. So happy to here you are enjoying it! Sabrina Fontana is incredible.

Ohh I am curious to see what you think of Picnic at Hanging Rock. I am curious about that one!

      1. I’m usually so indecisive about what to read next after I finish a book, but I’m thinking I’m probably going to read Picnic at Hanging Rock next. I really just want to start that show already, LoL.

      2. Well I haven’t started reading it yet, LoL. Still reading the sequel to You at the moment. But after seeing the trailers for the Amazon series over the summer and finding out the series is based on a book I was just like, “I need to read this book like now”, LoL. Can’t wait to start reading it though at some point.
