Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by the wonderful Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm. This week’s topic was a little difficult for me because I have realized that I just do not read a lot of books with villains. I am assuming that this is because I am not a huge reader of fantasy! I did manage to come up with five villains who I love, and I am sure that I am forgotten some as well.
Jackal (The Blood of Eden Series by Julia Kagawa)
Are you sick of me talking about Jackal yet? He is my favourite villain so how could I not! I really did like the main character, Allison, but I absolutely ADORE Jackal! He is witty, sarcastic, and his one-liners had me laughing out loud. Julie Kagawa has shared some great Jackal quotes on Goodreads and they are definitely worth reading.
AIDAN (The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff)
Keep in mind I have only read Illuminae, but I freaking loved AIDAN. I have never read about a character quite like him. I do not want to spoil anything so I am not going to tell you why I am so intrigued by him. Just read this series if you haven’t! Also, don’t get me wrong I really did like Kady but no one can be more interesting than AIDAN.
Lady MacBeth (MacBeth by William Shakespeare)
MacBeth who?! The star of the play and the most memorable character was definitely Lady MacBeth! She really was the smart one and I think she was more ambitious and greedy than MacBeth himself.
President Snow (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins)
I like Katniss but she is by no means one of my favourite characters in The Hunger Games. It was actually the side characters that stood out to me in that series. One of the characters that I loved to hate was Professor Snow. It is so perfectly evil.
Captain Hook (Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie)
I have never been a fan of Peter Pan as a character! Is it just me or is he a little annoying? I am a huge fan of pirates and I think Captain Hook was my first exposure to them. I have been looking for a pirate book that holds up to Peter Pan for years and have yet to find one. Any recommendations??
I need to read more books with fantastic villains! Vicious by Victoria Schwab is high on my lists! I can not wait to see everyone else’s lists this week to get some recommendations!

If you’re looking for pirate reads, I highly recommend Inherited by Freedom Matthews! Totally agree about Aidan in the Illuminae trilogy. I’m trying to think of ones that are different to the classics and the one that stands out for me is Sebastian in The Mortal Instruments series. Though, literally anyone in that series is better than Clary.

Lady MacBeth all the way! I totally agree with this! She’s so interesting…reading her sections of the play was by far the best…other than the ending, which I laughed at (yes…I’m morbid lol). Great list!

I can’t think of many villains either! Like you, I don’t read too much fantasy, so that’s probably why it’s hard for me too. 😉 I remember being so creeped out by President Snow, especially how they described his breath as smelling like blood?!
It is strange because I do like villains but I guess I don’t gravitate toward books that have them! Yes! That is what disturbed me most about President Snow as well!

I love Captain Hook! Have you read Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen? It’s a retelling of Hook’s life and he’s just such an awesome character!

I didn’t read Blood of Eden, but I remember how much my daughter loved Jackal. He was her favorite too.

I’ve only seen the Disney film, but I loved Captain Hook so much when I was younger! I really want to read the books because Peter Pan is one of my favourite films, and I’m so interested in seeing what the original story was like.

Yes Captain Hook is an awesome character -and there’s so many books coming out about his story -Lost Boy by Christina Henry for example. It’s about Hook back when he was still going by ‘Jaimie’ and one of Peter’s lost boys, and tells the story of how he became Hook

Okay, now I’m really curious about Aidan! And I highly, HIGHLY recommend The Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb (and the next two books). It’s got pirates AND a complex “villain” who definitely would take one of the top spots on my top 10 list. 🙂
Yes! Illuminae is excellent and big part of that is Aidan! That sounds so awesome. I have heard great things about Robin Hobb but didn’t realize she had a pirate series!
Aidan is such an interesting choice for this and I TOTALLY AGREE. Aidan’s arc was such a Rollercoaster in the first book. You were wary of it, if creeped you out, then you were fully terrified of it, mad at it, but then whoa, is it actually growing on you? and now you actually like it? It’s weird.
