I have done this tag twice in the past and I always loved doing it! If you are curious you can find those posts here and here. I am going to choose books that I have read so far this year!
THE RULES:
- Randomly choose 3 books
- For each group, decide which book to burn, which one to rewrite, and which to reread (like Marry, Boff, Kill).
- Repeat until you completed three rounds (or six) (or however many you want to do).
Round #1
Reread: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman- This is one of the first five star books that I read this year! I was completely charmed by it and I already want to reread it.
Rewrite: Lincoln in Bardo- I loved this book but there were definitely parts where it dragged and I was utterly confused. I do not know how I would change that but maybe even an introduction would be helpful?
Burn: I thought Love, Life, and the List was a cute story but nothing special. If I burned this one there are still many other adorable Kasie West books that I could pick up!
Round #2
Reread: Crazy Rich Asians– I had such a hard time deciding between this one and The Hating Game, but ultimately I think I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians just a little bit more. The cast of characters are all vibrant and hilarious, and I adored the setting. I will hopefully reread it before watching the movie, which also looks amazing!
Rewrite: The Hating Game– I am not sure how I would rewrite The Hating Game! I love the hate to love trope and both the main character and the love interest were fantastic. I would probably have liked a bit more banter and tension!
Burn: How to Stop Time- Unfortunately, this book let me down. I was hoping for an original take on time travel, but it fell flat for me. The main character ended up being quite annoying, and I disliked the chapters written in the present day.
Round #3
Reread: Never Let Me Go- This is my favourite book of the year so of course I would want to reread it! I am sure I would gain even more from it the second time around. It is such a unique story that sticks with you and has you asking a million questions. I can not wait to experience that again.
Rewrite: They Both Die in the End– I really did enjoy They Both Die in the End but there are a few things that I would change. There were perspectives from other characters that I felt were not necessary and took away from the story. I know that there has to be insta-love in order for this story to work but still…
Burn: The Giver– I actually really liked The Giver but I could live without it. I wish we were given more background on the world. I think it is a story I would have appreciated much more if I had read it when I was younger.
Round #4
Reread: Six of Crows– Choosing between this and The Song of Achilles was almost impossible! Ultimately I decided to reread Six of Crows because I really adore every single character for a different reason.
Rewrite: The Song of Achilles– There is not much that I would change about this book. The only thing I would add is a little more romance in the book when they were adults. I feel like their love story kind of got lost in all of the battles, and I was craving more!
Burn: The Light We Lost– I very much disliked The Light We Lost so this was an easy choice for me. I found it to be emotionally manipulative, and the characters were absolutely awful! I was actively rooting against them and their love story.
Round #5
Reread: Every Heart a Doorway- This is one of the most unique stories that I have ever read and I enjoyed absolutely every second of it. I was not expecting it to be so dark, but that only made me love it even more. I am looking forward to continuing on with the series.
Rewrite: Dark Matter- I really thought Dark Matter was fantastic but there was a lot of science jargon that went over my head. Maybe I would try to explain things in more layman’s terms?
Burn: The Belles- This story had so much potential but I ending up having a lot of problems with it. I thought the main character was quite dull, and there was not enough character development for any of the characters. I wish we were given a better understanding of the villains motives!

This seems like a really interesting challenge to do! I don’t think I’d be able to choose any book to burn though. That just seems a little cruel.
It was hard to choose which ones to “burn” because a lot of them are actually good books!!
I just finished Eleanor Oliphant a few days ago. That book ripped my heart out, I swear.

This is such a fun tag! I completely agree with you about How to Stop Time and The Song of Achilles, and would also love to re-read Never Let Me Go.
I’m glad I am not the only one who felt that way about How to Stop Time! I hope we both reread Never Let Me Go and gain even more from it!

I just finished Every Heart a Doorway and I couldn’t agree with you more! I put both book 2 and 3 on hold at the library and added the fourth book to my most anticipated 2019 releases :] It was soo different from anything I have ever read, and while it was super short, I felt like they packed in quite a bit! I cannot wait to see what the other books in the series are like :]

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine sounds so good! I’m so mad at myself for still not reading it! And I definitely see where you’re coming from with The Song of Achilles, the romance aspect did feel a little lost when they were adults!

I was so shocked about The Giver and The Song of Achilles! haha I love The Giver but I agree with you, maybe the author could have explained to us why they and we were there, what happened for the world to be like it was. Although I think that the author put more importance on the “now” than the past, right? hmm I don’t know…
Achilles… I almost died of sorrow on the book! At the end I see what you mean… the whole war eclipsed their romance… but isn’t war like that? I cried and I will always cried T_T
I completely agree with everything you said!! I actually adored both The Giver and A Song of Achilles so it wouldn’t even be hard to rewrite them!
what I hate about The Giver is all the intrigue and the secrecy about Jonas… I was like where in the name of God is Jonas!? and why do I have to read the rest to figure it out? XD I don’t know I wouldn’t change a thing on Achilles… I think I am too infatuated with the grief and love haha
Aww, you burned The Giver, my favorite MG read… 😭 But I do agree with you on Song of Achilles! The romance felt a bit buried towards the end, and that’s something that could’ve definitely been improved upon. Oh, and I can’t wait to read Elinor Oliphaunt and Hating Game! I’ve heard such great things about them. 😉
