Audiobooks I Want to Listen To

Audiobooks

I will always remember 2018 as the year that I fell in love with audiobooks, and I am so thankful for it! This discovery has completely changed by reading game, and I love being able to read/listen while I am doing everyday chores. I truly think audiobooks have improved my overall happiness! I thought it would be fun to share some of the audiobooks that I am most looking forward to and why.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

29906980

I have read a physical copy of Lincoln in the Bardo earlier this year and absolutely loved it. I have heard that the audiobook is even better, and there is a huge cast of characters- 116 to be exact and they are each read by a different actor! As soon as I heard Nick Offerman is one of the characters I was sold! I love him and his voice. I also think it is one of those books that will benefit from a reread because I am sure there is a lot a missed the first time.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomary

20893527

Anne of Green Gables is another book that I have read and absolutely adored! Anne is one of my all time favourite characters and I would love to experience this story in all forms, including audiobook. Rachel McAdams narrates this one and she is an actress that I absolutely love.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

231804

The Outsiders is one of the books that I credit for making me fall in love with reading and I am ashamed to say it has been years since I have read it! I have a feeling that is a book that will translate well as an audiobooks, but I know I will have to carry tissues around with me while I listen to it.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

20170404

I can not believe I have not read Station Eleven yet! Everyone seems to rave about it and I know I am going to love it. It sounds like that kind of beautiful Science Fiction novel that I have really been in to lately. I have heard great things about the audio version, and it is on Scribd so I am hoping to get to it soon!

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

22813605

I have been wanting to read Hunger, but I know it is going to be an emotionally difficult read. I have been told that the audiobook is excellent and is narrated by Roxane Gay herself. I think that her reading her own very personal memoir will make the story that much more impactful. I just have to emotionally prepare myself for it first.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

18045891

I have discovered that I prefer listening to thrillers versus reading the physical copy. Somehow listening to a thriller makes it more creepy and gets my heart and mind racing. I have been wanting to read Sharp Objects for years, but now that the miniseries has started I need to make it a priority!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

8036918

I want to read more classics but I never find myself reaching for them on my shelves. I think that listening to them on audiobook might be the perfect solution! Whenever I see someone post a list of their all time favourite classics, more often than not Jane Eyre is near the top. I enjoyed the movie so I know it is a story that I like and can not wait to finally read something by Charlotte Bronte. There are so many different audiobook versions out there so if you have a favourite please let me know!

Since I am new to audiobooks, I have not listened to too many! I would love to know your favourites and which ones I just have to listen to!

  1. If you like YA, The Illuminae Files are amazing. It sounds like a movie because there is a different actor for every character, plus there’s sound effects. I also loved Amor Towles The Man from Moscow. It is written so well, and the narrator does a great job with it! I love audio books as re-reads of my favorite novels. I am listening to both Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series and Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels. Its a great way, in a series thats been out for a ling time to catch up before the next novel comes out. I want to tackle the Outlander series, my sister says its a great audio. I’ve read the first four but so long ago!

    1. I have read and loved Illuminae but have yet to continue on with the series. Maybe audiobooka are the way to go! Thanks! Going to look in to The Man from Moscow as well! I am hoping to listen to more of my favourite books on audiobook. It is such a unique experience! I have heard amazing things about the audiobooks for Outlander!

      1. If you like paranormal, The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger series is fun! The narrator does some great voices. Its a paranormal steam punk mysteries. Odd but somehow it works.

  2. I also fell in love with audiobooks this year so I definitely understand how you feel! It’s such a good medium especially when I don’t feel like reading a physical book haha

  3. I really want to listen to Hunger as well. I recently finished listening to ‘Born a Crime’ and it’s a brilliant audiobook as well. Trevor Noah is a stand-up comedian and him reading his memoir is both raw and funny. He really does pour himself into the narrative. I am really glad to hear Hunger is narrated by its author as well. I will definitely be checking it out soon.

Great list, thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

  4. This is the year I’ve fallen in love with audiobooks, too! Station Eleven and Lincoln in the Bardo are also on my to-be-listened-to list (the former I’ve read, the latter I have not). I’ve really loved the The Chronicles of Narnia audiobooks, so if you are interested in that series definitely check them out; the narrators are fantastic.

  5. Yay, some love for The Outsiders! I really need to reread that sometime. And I also really want to listen to the Lincoln in the Bardo audiobook even though I’ve already read it, that cast just seems brilliant! Station Eleven is so so so good, I hope you enjoy it!

  6. I adore “The Outsiders”! It remains to be one of my favourite pieces of literature! I’m thinking of reading AND listening to the audiobook of Anne of Green Gables this year. I also want to do that with Dracula. My one bookish friend was saying she does that when she wants to get into a book but has a difficult time concentrating on it. She found listening to it WHILE reading it at the same time helped *fingers crossed*.

  7. The only audiobooks that actually work for me are middle grade, I can’t listen to YA or general adult audiobooks for some reason.

  8. Great post! I’m considering trying out audiobooks. But I’m a very visual person and I’m scared that I’ll just tune out the book or not really comprehend it…I should try it out soon, though. 🙂

  9. I love audiobooks, they’re so convenient! I really liked the audiobook versions of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and Ready Player One that I listened to😊

  10. Even if you aren’t a fan of historical romances, you should try to listen to a few Georgette Heyers’ books as audio books . They are so much funnier in that format.

  11. Station Eleven is an amazing book! I’ve still never read Anne of Green Gables, but I recently added the audiobook to my Audible library, so at least I”m heading in the right direction. 🙂

  12. I LOVE audiobooks. Love and First Sight by Josh Sundquist is wonderful as an audiobook. I also listened to The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon as an audiobook and that’s pretty great, too.

  13. I unfortunately wasn’t paying attention when my teacher read The Outsiders to us in school, so I would love to re-read (or listen) that. And same, I really want to read Station Eleven as well! I’ve heard great things about it. 😉 Great picks!

      1. I really want to! I feel like it’s going to be so up my alley, so I honestly don’t know why I’ve been putting it off. 😭

  14. I REALLY want to read Hunger, but I’m worried I’m emotionally unprepared for it. We’ll see…Also, I had no idea Rachel McAdams narrated Anne of Green Gables! I’m definitely going to check that out.

  15. This is the year I finally fell in love with audio books as well! I am only getting through 1-2/month but I love being able to consume a book while doing chores around the house or commuting! I’m currently listening to TO ALL THE BOYS I LOVED BEFORE and the narrator is perfect for the vibe of the story!

  16. Audiobooks are such a new thing for me too! I love listening to them while driving or while working in the house, I find that I cannot concentrate on them while doing other work (they do require some concentration). I’ve listened to Harry Potter – which was really really good. I started with something familiar, so that it wasn’t as strange at the beginning.

Since then I’ve listened to THUG – unfortunately my free trail expired and I didn’t finish it, but the narration was really good! Good luck with all of these and I hope you enjoy them all ❤️

      1. I’ve actually not managed to finish THUG yet – but I am planning to before the movie gets released. The trailer looks amazing and I’m so excited to go and see it ❤️
