I thought this week’s topic was really interesting because it is not something that I ever thought about before! Surely if I loved a book, there is a chance that I would read it in the future right? The more that I thought about it and looked at books that I loved, the more that I realized that that is not necessarily the case. There are actually many different reasons as to why I might choose not to reread a book I love!
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
I read The Female of the Species in March and thought it was fantastic, but I knew instantly that I would never read it again. It talks about some very heavy issues that are triggers for me. I really appreciate how everything was handle and the overall message and I am so happy that I read it. I just don’t think it is something I would emotionally put myself through again.
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
I was completely blown away by Fight Club! I was not expecting to love it as much as I did. I was so surprised by the ending, and obviously I would not experience the same shock upon a reread. I am sure that I would find some foreshadowing and clues if I reread it, and that might be interesting but I loved my first reading experience so much that I do not want to overshadow it.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is such a beautifully devastating book that I do not think I could read it again. It tore my heart apart! I can’t even make myself watch the movie much less reread it! I do want to read all of his other books though!
Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Night Film is my favourite horror/thriller! It is written in such a unique way and I loved my whole experience reading it. That said, I know the ending so I do not think that I would feel the same terror if I read it for a second time!
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Murder of the Orient Express was my first Agatha Christie novel and I fell in love with it! This is another case where I know the ending so rereading it would not feel the same. There are so many other Agatha Christie novels that I want to read so I would want to get through all of those before I would even considered rereading any of them.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I really loved The Hunger Games when I first read them but I think my reading tastes have changed since then. I rarely read series, yet alone reread them! I do love this story and I think if I want to revisit it I will just watch the movie!
The Martian by Andy Weir
I really did love The Martian, and I especially adored the main character, but the thought of rereading it does not appeal to me. There is a lot of science lingo that I admittedly skimmed and I found it repetitive at times. It was a fun book but I do not think I will gain much more from it if I were to read it again.
The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
I do not think I would ever reread any of Liane Moriarty’s books and it is not because I disliked them, because I LOVE them, it is because I do not think they are the kind of books that are meant to be reread. Throughout the whole book you are at the edge of your seat trying to guess what is happening, and that is truly the magic of her stories. If you knew what the twist was than the reading experience wouldn’t be as fun!
The Knife of Never Letting GO by Patrick Ness
I read The Knife of Never Letting Go many years ago and I feel like I need to reread it in order to continue on with the series. I really loved this book and I could not put it down, but there is a certain death that made me so angry that I am not sure I could put my poor little heart through that again! Honestly, I would rather not continue on with the series than have to read that part again…
Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis
I do not think that I would ever read any celebrity memoirs again! Once you learn about their life and their story, I do not see what there would be to gain from rereading them! I really enjoyed Scar Tissue and I learned a lot about Anthony Kiedis that I did not know before. He has lead an extremely interesting life.
I really loved this week’s topic and I would love to know what book that you love but you would never reread and why! Have you reread any of the books I talked about? Did you enjoy that experience?
Lol I put Knife on my list this week for exactly the same reason. I’m not even sure I’ll go watch the film, Ness is evil and shows no remorse about killing off that particular character 😂
I would and have reread The Hunger Games. I actually listened to it on audio last year and it was just as good. I knew what happened but there were little details I’d forgotten.

Oh I never thought about the audiobook of The Hunger Games. That could be interesting!
I really like listening to stories I know well. If you lose concentration and miss a bit it doesn’t really matter.

I feel the same way about The Murder on the Orient Express. It’s an awesome book, but Agatha Christie just has sooo many books that I want to read. Have you seen the new movie adaptation though?
Thank you! I have seen the movie and I thought it was really well done! I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t know the ending. My friends who I was with loved it.
I was incredibly stunned in Knife too, and I know Ness has gotten so much shit for That Scene (and as much as I hate him for it, I’m…okay with it after the fact? Ish). So I’m really interested to see how it’ll be treated in the film!

The Boy With the Striped Pajamas… ahhh!! I couldn’t ever read that one again. It broke me! I also agree about, The Husband’s Secret. Great book but I don’t know that I would ever pick it up again.

The Knife of Never Letting Go 🙁
That death was so hard, OMG. I don’t think I would be able to read that again either. I really enjoyed the rest of the series though. The second book wasn’t as great as the first though. At least in my opinion.
I wish I had read the rest of the books right away! I was just so mad!
I’ve seen “Night Film” around a lot, and though I was drawn in by its cover art, I’m not sure it’d be a “me book.” I’ve heard ‘Striped Pajamas’ is excellent and someday I’d like to try and read an Agatha Christie novel! Especially since I do like the ITV miniseries about Miss Marple. 🙂
Night Film isn’t my usual genre but I loved it!
I highly recommend Striped Pajamas but have tissues ready. It’s a heartbreaker!

It seems like any book that hinges on plot twists, mysteries, or surprise endings doesn’t have re-read value to you. I can see that. Personally I always find it fun the second time, and I pick up on a lot of details and foreshadowing I missed. But I’m a big re-reader, I re-read most of the books I own.
I think a lot of it is because I am not a big rereader so books like that wouldn’t be ones that draw me in to reread them! I do think it is interesting to go back and look for foreshadowing!
I kind of want to reread The Hunger Games for the same reason you’ve said you don’t, I want to see if I like it as much the second time around (especially since it’s been a few years!).

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas just punches me in the gut every time. It’s such an emotional book. I agree with The Hunger Games. I loved those books when I first read them and will always be greatful to them for getting me back into reading, but my reading tastes have changed since.

I totally agree. I am thankful for the Hunger Games as well. It was the first time in a long time where I stayed up all night reading. I don’t want to taint that experience in anyway!
I think The Knife of never Letting Go is also on my list! I have yet to read the final book, I know it will crush my soul T_T

I thought you take on this post was interesting!! I tend to associate not rereading with something negative, but you picked up those books mostly because you loved them so much that you didn’t want to overshadow the first reading experience!! Never thought of that !🙂📚

I can totally understand what you are saying about Perks of Being a Wallflower. There are some books that hit a little to close to home.
You are RUINING my TBR! I don’t like it (I love it). But I know what you mean about The Martian. As much as I loved the story the first time around, I don’t think I could push through it a second time. Especially not after the movie (let’s not talk about that one, yeah?)

I loved Night Film!!!! Got my mom a copy too, I’m a big pusher of that book. The Martian I found the be a lot of fun I gave it gave stars because I loved the humour in it, but I think if I were to do a reread it would be an audio book.
Night Film is fantastic. I was so surprised by how much I loved it! The Martian probably would be a great audiobook!
I have heard it’s good to listen too, my bf really enjoyed the audio for Artemis.
