The 90’s Quiz Book Tag

90'sBookTag

I saw this tag on Quirky Lady Bookworm Reviews and I just had to do it! I was born ’89 so I consider myself a 90’s kid! There is so much nostalgia in this tag and I am here for it!

The Rules

  1. Please, please, please steal this tag and spread it around! I only ask that you link it back to The Literary Phoenix so that I can see everyone’s answers!
  2. Freeze tag was all the rage in the 90s. Tag someone (or many) you think would have fun with this!
  3. Have fun!

POKEMON

A GBA GAME AND TRADING CARD GAME WHERE YOU BATTLED POCKET MONSTERS AND STRIVED TO CATCH THEM ALL. BACK IN THE DAY, THERE WERE ONLY 150 POKEMON.

THE AUTHOR YOU NEED EVERY BOOK FROM.

Fredrik Backman for sure! A Man Called Ove is one of my all time favourite books and I know that I am going to love everything that he writes. I already own Britt-Marie Was Here so hopefully I will get to that soon. I have heard so many good things about Bear Town as well!

AIM

AOL INSTANT MESSAGING – HOW 90S KIDS COMMUNICATED WITH THEIR FRIENDS AFTER SCHOOL BEFORE EVERYONE HAD A CELL PHONE.

BOOK THAT CONNECTED YOU WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

First things first, I never used AIM! I was more of an MSN girl myself but I digress! My friends and I really bonded over The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants in middle school. There was a group of four us and we each related to a different character from the book. We thought that was pretty cool and we became pretty obsessed with the series!

FURBY

CREEPY NEEDY ROBOTS YOU COULD TEACH TO TALK AND WERE PROBABLY DEMON POSSESSED. SOMEHOW THESE MADE A COMEBACK?

BOOK THAT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA BUT WAS ACTUALLY A MONSTER.

I am going to go with The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. I really enjoyed The Lovely Bones when I read it years ago, and I thought that it was a good idea to read another one of her books. It was a very bad idea. The Almost Moon is my least favourite book. I just looked it up on Goodreads and it has a 2.7 rating, so I know I am not the only one who feels that way!

N’SYNC

90S QUINTESSENTIAL BOY BAND. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?

A BOOK YOU HATED TO SAY BYE, BYE, BYE TO.

Just like The Quirky Lady Bookworm, I was more of a Backstreet Boys girl myself! Most recently I was sad to finish Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is such a wonderful book and I hated to say goodbye to the characters.

SLIMED!

GETTING GREEN SLIME THROWN ON YOU, COURTESY OF THE SHOW FIGURE IT OUT. ALSO APPARENTLY STILL A THING AT THE KID’S CHOICE AWARDS?

A BOOK EVERYONE LOVED BUT YOU HATED.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it! I could not connect to any of the characters and reading about the same day over and over again is just not my thing.

OREGON TRAIL

90S COMPUTER GAME YOU COULD USUALLY PLAY AT SCHOOL, WHICH WAS GREAT. IT TAUGHT US PEOPLE USED TO DIE A LOT OF GRUESOME, MESSY DEATHS.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU WISH YOU DIED OF DYSENTERY.

This question is hilarious! I do not know that I have ever read a book that I hated that much- not even The Almost Moon!

MIXTAPE/CD

BACK BEFORE EVERYONE HAD MUSIC ON THEIR PHONES (REMEMBER, WE DIDN’T HAVE CELL PHONES!) FOLKS WOULD RIP THEIR CDS AND MAKE MIXES FOR EACH OTHER.

3 BOOKS YOU RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, ANYWHERE, NO MATTER WHAT.

  1. Cannery Row by John Steinbeck (it is my favourite book!)
  2. Far From the Tree by Robin Benway
  3. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

DIAL-UP INTERNET

YOU KNOW HOW IT’S ANNOYING WHEN YOU AREN’T ON LTE? IMAGING WAITING 10 MINUTES FOR INTERNET TO START AND ANOTHER 20 MINUTES FOR GOOGLE TO LOAD!

A BOOK THAT TOOK FOR FREAKING EVER TO READ.

East of Eden is taking me forever to read! I know I am going to love it but I have just not been picking it up lately! Classics usually take me a long time to read because of the language and symbolism. They take more effort and concentration!

KENAN THOMPSON

HE’S THAT GUY WHO’S BEEN ON SNL FOREVER. ALSO MIGHTY DUCKS. GOOD BURGER. KEENAN AND KEL. ALL THAT. EVERYTHING.

THAT BOOK YOU SEE REFERENCED EVERYWHERE AND IS IN EVERYTHING, BUT THAT’S OKAY BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.

I am going to say The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. Everyone has been talking about it recently, and for good reason. It is beautiful, yet dark. It is truly a fairytale for adults.

THUMBS UP, SEVEN UP

A GAME WHERE MOST THE CLASS CLOSED THEIR EYES AND SEVEN PEOPLE TAPPED SOMEONE’S THUMB AND YOU HAD TO GUESS WHO DID IT WITHOUT PEEKING.

BOOK WHERE YOU PEEKED JUST REAL QUICK AT THE ENDING BECAUSE YOU DON’T LIKE GUESSING GAMES.

I used to do this all of the time! I think the last time I did this was probably The Hunger Games. I just had to know how it ended, and I regretted it instantly!

DUNKAROOS

THESE WERE BASICALLY JUST TEDDY GRAHAMS DIPPED IN FROSTING, WHICH IS STILL A WONDERFUL SNACK IDEA.

YOUR IDEAL BOOKISH SNACK

I can not remember the last time I ate a snack while reading. I guess I just can not multitask!

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK

COLLECTIONS OF SHORT STORIES THAT WOULD SCARE ANY SENSIBLE KID! PLUS, THERE WERE ILLUSTRATIONS…

A BOOK THAT KEPT YOU UP ALL NIGHT.

Night Film for sure! It kept me up all night reading it because I had to know what was going on. It was also creepy and really strange so I had a hard time falling asleep when I was finished!

BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY

BASICALLY THE COOLEST THING YOU GOT TO DO IN SCIENCE CLASS WAS WATCH BILL NYE. HE HAS A NETFLIX SHOW AGAIN!

A BOOK THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING NEW.

I feel like I learn something new from almost every book that I read! I read Animal Farm for the first time last year and there is a lot to learn from it. I love how it explains complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand and entertaining.

I tag anyone who grew up in the 90’s!

  1. This tag is AMAZING!! I definitely want to do it. I’m such a 90’s kid. Also, I really need to read A Bear and the Nightingale. Everyone has been talking about it recently, and I own it. So I don’t know what’s taking me so long.

  2. I really enjoyed this fun twist on things we loved and remembered as kids – Oregon Trail for sure!!
I added Far From the Tree to my TBR list (it’s getting sooo long!) Thanks for all the good blogs and posts!

  3. This tag and your answers are awesome. I was born in ‘97 so does that still make me a 90s kid. I know what everything is on this list. Lol

  4. AAAH. Thank you so much for doing this tag. I’m an ’89 as well – right on the edge. :). The Book Thief is such a PERFECT recommendation. Even though I wrote it, I couldn’t decide which three books. I have about … 20 insta-recommends.

  5. I need to find an 80s version of this. It was so much fun to read! Dunkaroo’s are still around my daughter used to love them.
I can still hear the sound of dial up in my head after all these years.
    Fantastic post!
