Top Ten Tuesday is a fun meme that was created over at The Broke and the Bookish! This week is a throwback freebie and I thought it might be fun to look back on my favourite books from the year I discovered Goodreads! I participated in my first goodreads reading challenge in 2013, so I am going to guess that that is the year I joined. Apparently I set my goodreads goal to 90 that year and I managed to read 85- I am quite impressed with my past self! I read a lot of my all time favourite books in 2013 as well! Lets just jump right in to this!
Moonlight on Linoleum: A Daughter’s Memoir by Terry Helwig– I believe that I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wells the year before and I wanted to read more memoirs similar to that one. If you loved The Glass Castle as much as I did than I think you will also enjoy Moonlight on Linoleum. It is a very emotional story.
The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman– I never used to write reviews on goodreads but apparently I felt compelled to for this book! I will leave the short review I wrote for you here:
|
Just so you know, I have yet to see the movie!
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald– One of my favourite books of all time! I do not think that it is a coincidence that I read this the year the movie came out! Having Leonard DiCaprio starring in the movie was the push I needed to finally read the book. I am so happy that I did. Definitely one of my favourite classics.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline– Another one of my all time favourite books! I read this one at the same time as my brother and we both loved it. I have so many great memories attached to it!
And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini– I remember buying this the day that it was released. He is an autobuy author for me so I was very excited when this came out. Of course I loved it! It makes me sad that he hasn’t released a book since!
The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls- I am not surprised at all to see that I read one of her books in 2013. It was around this time that I became totally obsessed with her writing and read every book that she had published. Silver Star was her first fiction novel and I thought it was fantastic.
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa– I have talked about this book many times on my blog, but this is definitely my favourite vampire series. It manages to be unique, and it is both dark and humourous. Please give the Blood of Eden series a chance!
Love Anthony by Lisa Genova- She is an autobuy author for me, and Love Anthony is my favourite book of hers. I believe that she handles the topic of autism very well, and this is a story that has stayed with me all of these years later.
The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han- I don’t love this series as much as To All the Boys I’ve Loved before, but I still have a soft spot for it. I binge read it and thought it was so endearing yet heartbreaking.
Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion– This book was all the rage in 2013 and I was all about it. For some reason I always forget about this book, but I loved it back in the day. I want to reread it and see how I feel about it now.
I wanted to share a few other highlights from that year! Apparently 2013 was when I discovered John Green because I read all of his book that year. I also read Divergent, City of Bones, and Vampire Academy in 2013! It was a great reading year for me- I wish I was blogging back then!
I didn’t properly start tracking my reading on Goodreads until end of 2013 going into 2014, but I was signed up way before! I use it more than Facebook and Twitter now, but I’m upset I never used to track all the books I read! I read Great Gatsby last year and it was so amazing! Definitely want to reread it because some parts are a bit foggy, but I remember loving it! Great list ☺️ My TTT: https://bookmuffin.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/books-i-read-in-my-first-year-at-uni/
I used to use it just to look up reviews but never actually tracked my reading either!
I am so glad you like Gatsby! Still remains an all time favourite?
Maybe not an all time favourite, but definitely a favourite classic!
how was the book “warm bodies”? i just saw the movie which i really enjoyed, it was so much fun?
and the movie of “the light between oceans” was ok. i mean, michael fassbender 😀 he was definitely a plus, since i had mixed feelings about the story…
Warm Bodies was even better than the movie I thought! It is definitely just as fun!
I have heard mixed things about the Oceans movie so I am in no rush to watch it!
oh that sounds good! maybe i’ll read it then! 🙂
yeah, well michael fassbender definitely saved that movie haha 😀
I have uet to read The Light between Oceans and The Great Gatsby, they both sound fantastic!!
They really are!!
I’ve had The Light Between Oceans on my Goodreads to read list since 2014 ha! It’s one of the two books I have in that list as I don’t really put books there that I want to read. I know I should get to it, but I’m lazy 😛 But your praise of it makes me want to pick it up a little more.
You discovered a lot of good books in 2013. I discovered John Green in 2012 and I did the same, binge all his books! 😛
The Light Between Oceans is so unique! I hope you like it when you are in the mood to read it!
I think a lot of people binge read John Greens books! Are you excited for his new one?
That’s good to hear, I hope I like it too, thanks 🙂
I’m not as excited as I once was about his novels. I think his novels are kinda predictable because they all have the same feel. I’m curious to see if this is like his others so I may read it when the hype wears down. Are you excited? 🙂
I am optimistic about it because I did enjoy the first chapters that he read! His books did become very predictable though. I was not a fan of Paper Towns or An Abundance of Katherines!
Paper Towns was the first book of his that I read so that will always be my favourite. But I understand why people don’t like it.
That’s good that you’ve enjoyed some of it! That leaves room for hope that the rest will be good! 🙂
I didn’t take Goodreads as seriously when I first signed in 2013. Of course, I’m addicted now. But, then, I visited every so often without lists and challenges. Time’s changed!
Glad to see The Great Gatsby on your list.
Goodreads is really amazing now!
Great Gatsby is excellent!!
Ready Player One is a book that has forever been sitting on my tbr list. I’m told it’s an incredible book and perfect if you’re a gamer, which I am not haha. The concept of the book does sound really interesting though, I just have to be in the right mood to read it.
It’s so fun! I definitely recommend reading it before the movie comes out!! 😀
My brother is not a reader and the games he plays are typically shooter/war games, but he absolutely loved RPO. I’m a geek and so all the references to 1980s pop culture was entertaining for me. Ready Player One is definitely on my list of favorite books. I hope you get in the right mood to read it, and that you enjoy it as well.
This is exactly the same thing that happened with my brother. He loved this book and he never reads!
Let’s see, I joined Goodreads in August or September of 2010 for one of my grad school library courses. But I didn’t start participating in the reading challenges until 2013 (128 books read that year). Since then I’ve continued to do well with my Goodreads yearly totals: 2014 (92 books), 2015 (81 books), 2016 (133 books), and so far in 2017 (86 books).
Well done! That is a lot of books read in 5 years!
Thanks!
Wow, you read some great books that year! Also a few that I still haven’t gotten around too, so yuo’ve reminded me to bump them up my list!

There were a lot of great books to choose from! I really got in to reading again in 2013!
Love your take on the week’s theme. Lots of fun books on here too! 🙂
Thank you! It was fun to look back and see what I read!
