Review- Waking Gods (Themis Files #2) by Sylvain Neuvel

30134847 (1).jpgGoodreads Summary– As a child, Rose Franklin made an astonishing discovery: a giant metallic hand, buried deep within the earth. As an adult, she’s dedicated her brilliant scientific career to solving the mystery that began that fateful day: Why was a titanic robot of unknown origin buried in pieces around the world? Years of investigation have produced intriguing answers—and even more perplexing questions. But the truth is closer than ever before when a second robot, more massive than the first, materializes and lashes out with deadly force.

Now humankind faces a nightmare invasion scenario made real, as more colossal machines touch down across the globe. But Rose and her team at the Earth Defense Corps refuse to surrender. They can turn the tide if they can unlock the last secrets of an advanced alien technology. The greatest weapon humanity wields is knowledge in a do-or-die battle to inherit the Earth . . . and maybe even the stars.

Loves

  1. Even more thrilling than the first– This book had my heart-racing and I was on the edge of my seat for majority of the time.
  2. Female characters– I really appreciate how Sylvain Neuvel writes his female characters. They are realistic, with no cliches or stereotypes! Bravo!
  3. More robots than the first book– My only “complaint” about Sleeping Giants was that I thought there would be more robots! Let me tell you- Waking Gods have more robots!
  4. Character development– We really get to know our beloved characters more and see how they have grown and changed over time.

dislikes

Hmmm… I have been wracking my brain here but I seriously can not think of anything I truly disliked about this novel!

quotes

“I may believe in God, but I’m at war with him.”

“I came to realize that good and evil were out of my reach, that time was the only thing I had any control over. I could buy time, create intervals. I could not truly make the world a better place, but I could make part of it a better place for a short while.”

“I’ve crossed the line we’re not supposed to cross. I died. And I’m still here. I cheated death”

I know this review will mean nothing to you if you haven’t read the first novel, Sleeping Giants, which I have a review for here.  I just adored Waking Gods so much that I had to talk about it! It takes everything that I adored about Sleeping Giants and improved upon it.  The Themis Files is shaping up to be my favourite series of all time!

  1. I am glad you really enjoyed this one. I plan to pick it up sometime in the future for sure. It sounds like it has all the things that I wanted more of in book 1.
