My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
- Fast-paced! I always appreciate a quick read that is also enjoyable and thoughtful.
- The doodles. Nicola Yoon’s husband, David, did the illustrations for this novel and made it unique and quirky.
- Diversity! The main character is African-American and Japanese.
- The romance. Maddy and Olly have a healthy relationship. In my opinion, they have a relationship that young readers should admire. They respect each other, look out for one another, and have a great balance.
- Instalove. I do not love when a characters sees someone for the first time and is willing to throw away their whole life. I wish there was a greater focus on Maddy wanting to make changes for herself, instead of wanting to do it for Olly.
- The twist. I will not say too much here as I do not want to spoil anyone but I found the twist predictable, and a bit of a cop-out.

“Sometimes you do things for the right reasons and sometimes for the wrong ones and sometimes it’s impossible to tell the difference.”
“My guilt is an ocean for me to drown in.”
Overall, I recommend Everything, Everything to anyone who enjoys young adult contemporaries. It was a quick, enjoyable read that I will recommend to friends. I know this has also been made in to a movie, which I look forward to seeing. I am hoping to post a book/movie comparison soon! As a bonus, here is a picture of my cat, Maggie- who you can see definitely enjoyed Everything, Everything!

Okay I totally agree about the “twist” at the end. I haven’t even read the book, but I instantly called what as going to happen because it wasn’t really a twist?? Idk I thought it was pretty predictable. BUT my sister for sure thought she was going to die, so much so that when we went to go see the movie, she leaned over to me during one of the scenes and went “this is the scene she dies” lol
I so agree! It would have been a twist to me if what happened didn’t actually happen! Haven’t seen the movie but there were so many signs that it was going to happen all throughout the book! I laughed out loud about your sisters comment. That’s too funny!

I’ve heard great things about this one, but I haven’t read it yet! I definitely think I’d read it before I watched the movie, though. Just not sure if either of those things are going to happen very soon… blasted TBR!!

I’ve never actually read ANY of Nicola Yoon’s books and I need to!! Seeing the trailer for Everything Everything made me think, woah I better read the book soon. Yet here I am…. um. whoops. 😶 *crickets chirp in background* I kinda slack off on reading YA
contemporaries a lot though he he he. 😬 On the contrary, All the Bright Places is at the top of my tbr for contemporaries! Have you read that one yet?
I haven’t read All the Bright Places but I’ve heard its even better than Everything, Everything! It seems like a great book to read this summer though! 🌞
I know what you mean about putting off contemporaries. If there’s a choice between a fantasy and a contemporary book 9 times out of 10 I’ll go for the fantasy!
